You may know these two names of Allah Ar-Rahmaan and Ar-Raheem. But do you know their meaning?

These two of the 99 names of Allah refer to Allah’s character of being merciful and forgiving.

There is a difference though, Ar-Rahmaan refers to the vastness of Allah’s mercy, and Ar-Raheem refers specifically to His mercy he bestows on His creation.

He is the only one who is most kind and loving towards all his creation. He is all inclusive and embraces any who will ask for his help.

But the abundance of Allah’s rahma (mercy) will not come you unless your intentions and actions are pure. It is only when you are truly sincere will you be deserving of Allah’s mercy. This is not something that can be faked, Allah knows the true intention inside a person’s heart.

In Surah Al A’raf ayat 56 it says, “And invoke Him in fear and aspiration. Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good.”

In this article, we will cover 4 different duas you can recite to ask for Allah’s mercy.

Dua to Forgive Us and Have Mercy Upon Us

The first dua comes from Surah Al A’raf ayat 155 and 156 and in Arabic it’s written,

Transliteration: Anta waliyyunaa faghfir lanaa warhammnnaa wa Anta khairul ghaafireen. Waktub lanaa fee haazi hid dunya hasanatan wa fil Aakhirati innaka hudnaaa ilaik.

Translation: You are our Protector, so forgive us and have mercy upon us; and You are the best of forgivers. And decree for us in this world [that which is] good and [also] in the Hereafter; indeed, we have turned back to You.

Second Dua For forgiveness and Allah’s mercy

The second dua comes from Surah Al-Muminun ayat 118,

رَّبِّ اغْفِرْ وَارْحَمْ وَاَنْتَ خَيْرُ الرّٰحِمِيْنَ

Transliteration: Rabbigh fir warham wa Anta khairur raahimeen
Meaning: My Lord, forgive and have mercy, and You are the best of the merciful.

third Dua From Surah kahf seeking Allah’s mercy

Surah Kahf ayat 10,

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةً وَهَيِّئْ لَنَا مِنْ أَمْرِنَا رَشَدًا

Transliteration: Rabbana atina mil-ladunka Rahmataw wa hayyi lana min amrina rashada
Meaning: Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance.

Fourth Dua To Forgive me and Show me Mercy

The final dua is was recited from Prophet Musa to seek forgiveness it was mentioned in Surah Al A’raf ayat 151,

رَبِّ ٱغْفِرْ لِى وَلِأَخِى وَأَدْخِلْنَا فِى رَحْمَتِكَ ۖ وَأَنتَ أَرْحَمُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ

Transliteration: Rabbighfirli wa li akhi wa adkhilnal fee rahmatika wa Anta arhamur rahimeen
Translation: My Lord, forgive me and my brother and admit us into Your mercy, for You are the most merciful of the merciful

Conclusion

Before you leave and we never hear from each other again (unless you subscribe to our newsletter) I would like to share one final hadith on having good character and is a good life long philosophy to follow.

Abu Dharr said:

“The Messenger of Allah said to me: ‘Have Taqwa (taqwa meaning conciousness or being cognizant) of Allah wherever you are, and follow an evil deed with a good one to wipe it out, and treat the people with good behavior.”

Grade : Hasan (Darussalam)
Reference : Jami At-Tirmidhi 1987
In-book reference : Book 27, Hadith 93
English translation : Vol. 4, Book 1, Hadith 1987

This hadith tells us Muslims to be cognizant of Allah in everything we do, and it recognizes that we are human and will inevitably be in the wrong or committed an act which is immoral. However, if we have the ability to be self-aware and catch ourselves then we should follow up and by doing something positive.

It’s amazing what happens when we become selfless and starting giving and caring about other people before ourselves. If we helped enough people get what they want we find ourselves having everything we ever could want.

Inshallah by reading these four duas, Allah’s Mercy will pour out on us. May he give us patience, knowledge, and fill our hearts with courage and strength.
