It is one of two parts of a person’s faith and for a good reason.
In this dunya, all of us will face many storms. Some of us during the storms will make an attempt to try and control the weather, they will curse, scream and shout but once they are done wailing about they will have no choice but to respect the fury of nature.
Some don’t have the emotional maturity to respect the storm.
They fail to realize that it is pours over all of us. They single this event as something that only happened to them. But this is not true, see it rains on all of us.
The one who learns to embrace the storms as part of life, but who also has the sabr (patience) and courage to not be disappointed with Allah will be among the ones who earn paradise. It is the one who can say, Alhamdulillah (all praise be to Allah) in any circumstance that Allah rewards.
“And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient”
Surah Baqarah Ayah 155
The intent behind this article is to explore the virtue of being patient. Inshallah, after reading the following hadith and Quran verses you will have a framework and be well equipped to overcome any hardship or challenges life throws your way.
Patience is a huge act worship and is reserved only for those who are tested with adversity. Do not let your suffering go to waste, learn and extract maximum reward from it. See it as an opportunity to build your character and toughen your mind.
If your life has been easy all along there is no need for such a quality.

Surah Qalam Ayah 48
فَٱصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُن كَصَاحِبِ ٱلْحُوتِ إِذْ نَادَىٰ وَهُوَ مَكْظُومٌۭ
Then be patient for the decision of your Lord, [O Muhammad], and be not like the companion of the fish when he called out while he was distressed.
Surah Luqman Ayah 17
[As luqman said to his son] O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] determination.

So be patient, [O Muhammad], as were those of determination among the messengers and do not be impatient for them. It will be – on the Day they see that which they are promised – as though they had not remained [in the world] except an hour of a day. [This is] notification. And will [any] be destroyed except the defiantly disobedient people?
58. And those who have believed and done righteous deeds – We will surely assign to them of Paradise [elevated] chambers beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. Excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers 59. Who have been patient and upon their Lord rely.
Hadith About Patience
With regard to the virtue of patience the hadith has similar teachings as the Qur’an. It tells us real patience comes when tragedy has struck us, whoever is patient and endures Allah will forgive him or her of their sins, and that if Allah wants to do good to someone he afflicts them with challenges.
Narrated Anas: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The real patience is at the first stroke of a calamity.”
Sahih Al Bukhari 1302, Jami At-Tirmidhi 987 and Sunan an-Nasa’i 1869
Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reported that some people from among the Ansar begged from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and he gave them. They again begged him and he again gave them, till when what was in his possession was exhausted he said:
Whatever good (riches, goods) I have, I will not withhold it from you. He who refrains from begging Allah safeguards him against want. and he who seeks sufficiency, Allah would keep him in a state of sufficiency, and he who shows endurance. Allah would grant him power to endure, and none is blessed with an endowment better and greater than endurance.
Sahih Muslim 1053 a
Abu Sa’id and Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him)
reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Never a believer is stricken with a discomfort, an illness, an anxiety, a grief or mental worry or even the pricking of a thorn but Allah will expiate his sins on account of his patience”. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. Riyad As Salihin Arabic/English book reference: Book 1, Hadith 37
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Do not wish for an encounter with the enemy. Pray to Allah to grant you safety; (but) when you encounter them, show patience.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. Riyad As Salihin Arabic/English book reference: Book 12, Hadith 1351
It was narrated from Ibn ‘Umar that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“The believer who mixes with people and bears their annoyance with patience will have a greater reward than the believer who does not mix with people and does not put up with their annoyance.” Reference: Sunan Ibn Majah 4032
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “If Allah wants to do good to somebody, He afflicts him with trials.” Sahih al-Bukhari 5645
