QU'RAN VERSES ON ARROGANCE

The Qur'an mentions two qualities extensively that destroy a believer's imaan (faith) and should be avoided: (1) arrogance and (2) pride. Arrogance leads to believing in a person's superiority over other groups or, in extreme situations, believing in one's ability over Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ (nauzubillah). This was the case for Firawn and various other dictators and oppressors.

Pride comes from taking responsibility for a personal quality or action, giving one an inflated sense of self. This was the case for Iblis, who believed he was better than Adam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) as he was made from fire, whereas Adam came from clay. With pride, the root cause is often neglecting the fact that everything that happens is because Allah (سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ) had willed it to happen. It's not due to one's superior intuition or ability.

In either case, the Qur'an discussed the matter, and in this post, we hope to provide you, the reader, with all the verses in the Qur'an that mention pride or arrogance.

And We did certainly give Moses the Torah and followed up after him with messengers. And We gave Jesus, the son of Mary, clear proofs and supported him with the Pure Spirit. But is it [not] that every time a messenger came to you, [O Children of Israel], with what your souls did not desire, you were arrogant? And a party [of messengers] you denied and another party you killed.
