The 24th Rabbana dua from the Quran which begins “rabbana la tajalna fitnatan…” is from Surah Yunus ayat 85-86.
This dua asks Allah for many different things and can be recited for the following:
- Remembrance and reliance on Allah alone.
- Asks through Allah’s mercy for protection and strength in your faith as a Muslim.
- Said to ask Allah that we do not fall into Fitnah (meaning trial, affliction, or distress).
In the previous ayat before this dua, Prophet Musa (AS) advises the Israelites that if they are truly Muslim they will only put their reliance in Allah alone. At the time, people were afraid of the Pharaoh because of the power he possesed, so Prophet Musa was advising the people to not be afraid as Allah will be enough for them.
It is then they recited the rabbana la tajalna fitnatan dua.

Transliteration: Rabbana la tajalna fitnatan lil qaumi zalimin wa najjina birahmatika minal qaumil kafirin
Translation of Rabbana la tajalna fitnatan lil qaumi
The English translation from various Quran translations:
DR. GHALI Our Lord, do not make us a temptation to the unjust people; And safely deliver us (all) by Your mercy from the disbelieving people.
MUHSIN KHAN Our Lord! Make us not a trial for the folk who are Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doing) (i.e. do not make them overpower us). And save us by Your Mercy from the disbelieving folk.
PICKTHALL Our Lord! Oh, make us not a lure for the wrongdoing folk; And, of Thy mercy, save us from the folk that disbelieve.
SAHIH INTERNATIONAL Our Lord, make us not [objects of] trial for the wrongdoing people And save us by Your mercy from the disbelieving people.
MUFTI TAQI USMANI Our Lord, do not make us a victim of the unjust people, and save us, through Your mercy, from the disbelieving people.
This prayer is said to be very comprehensive.
It begins by saying, “do not make us a victim (trial) for the wrongdoing people.”
By this it’s referring to the fact that when the prevailing truth comes to light, those who disbelieve will try to shun them or silence them. These would be the those who peddle falsehood and try to quiet the truth.
Then there’s a second group, those who believe but are afraid to openly and loudly profess their faith because they fear conflict with the authority figure of the time. In this case, Prophet Musa (pbuh) was advising the Muslims not to be afraid of the Pharaoh and his followers.
It asks Allah, to protect us from these two kinds of faults. It asks that we remain strong and successful in our efforts in the world so we may receive the rewards and the goodness of the afterlife.
This is a beautiful dua and should be recited to give us the courage to face the trials and adversity of this life. It asks Allah that we keep a strong iman and be equipped to deal with any oppression.
