“Let them pardon and overlook. Would you not love for Allah to forgive you? Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” Surah An-Nur 24:22

In today’s article we will go over one of the most powerful duas (sayyidul istighfar) to seek forgiveness from Allah.

This is related from Sahih Al-Bukhari Book 80, Hadith 3.

Sayyidul-Istighfar

The Prophet (pubh) said, “The most superior way of asking for forgiveness from Allah is:

Sayyidul Istighfar transliteration: Allahumma anta Rabbi la ilaha illa anta, Khalaqtani wa ana `Abduka, wa ana `ala `ahdika wa wa`dika mastata`tu, A`udhu bika min Sharri ma sana`tu, abu’u Laka bini`matika `alaiya, wa abu’u laka bidhanbi faghfir lee fa innahu la yaghfiru adhdhunuba illa anta.”

The Prophet (pbuh) added. “If somebody recites it during the day with firm faith in it, and dies on the same day before the evening, he will be from the people of Paradise; and if somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it, and dies before the morning, he will be from the people of Paradise.”

Subhanallah.

It’s also reported according by Abu Huraira that he heard Muhammad (pbuh) ask for Allah’s forgiveness more than seventy times a day. (Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 6307 In-book reference : Book 80, Hadith 4)

The man who Jannah is guaranteed still repented over seventy times a day. This is probably more than any of us can say for ourselves.

Asking for Allah’s forgiveness should not be limited by day or night. Whenever we remember Him we should seek forgiveness.

It’s Also important to be firm when asking for forgiveness.

Anas reported Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) as saying:

When one of you makes supplication, he should supplicate with a will and should not say: O Allah, confer upon me if Thou likest, for there is none to coerce Allah.

(Reference : Sahih Muslim 2678 In-book reference : Book 48, Hadith 7)

Say, “Astaghfirullah” which means “I seek forgiveness from Allah”.

Besides these these two invocations your actions have an impact on how Allah sees you. In the Quran, Surah Al Imran 3:134

The believers are those who spend in charity during ease and hardship and who restrain their anger and pardon the people, for Allah loves the doers of good.

Be merciful to others and you will receive mercy. Forgive others and Allah will forgive you.Source: Musnad Ahmad 7001, Grade: Sahih

Other Duas You Can Recite For Forgiveness From Hadith

‘Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: Prior to his demise, the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) used to supplicate frequently: Subhan Allahi wa bihamdihi; Astaghfirullaha wa atubu ilaihi. (Allah is free from imperfection, and I begin with praising Him. I beg forgiveness from Allah and I turn to Him in repentance.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim).

Ibn `Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) said: We counted Messenger’s saying a hundred times during one single sitting: Rabb-ighfir li, wa tubb `alayya, innaka Antat-Tawwabur-Rahim. (My Rubb! Forgive me and pardon me. Indeed, You are the Oft-Returning with compassion and Ever Merciful.”(Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi).
