Surah Al-Anfal Ayat 39 in Arabic Text
English Translation
Here you can read various translations of verse 39
And fight them until there is no fitnah and [until] the religion, all of it, is for Allah. And if they cease – then indeed, Allah is Seeing of what they do.
And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah altogether and everywhere; but if they cease, verily Allah doth see all that they do.
And fight against them until the mischief ends and the way prescribed by Allah – the whole of it -prevail Then, if they give up mischief, surely Allah sees what they do.
And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism: i.e. worshipping others besides Allah) and the religion (worship) will all be for Allah Alone [in the whole of the world]. But if they cease (worshipping others besides Allah), then certainly, Allah is All-Seer of what they do.
And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is all for Allah. But if they cease, then lo! Allah is Seer of what they do.
And fight them, till there is no temptation (Or: sedition, persecution) and the religion is all for Allah; so in case they refrain, then surely Allah is Ever-Beholding whatever they do.
[Believers], fight them until there is no more persecution, and all worship is devoted to God alone: if they desist, then God sees all that they do,
Quran 8 Verse 39 Explanation
For those looking for commentary to help with the understanding of Surah Al-Anfal ayat 39, we’ve provided two Tafseer works below. The first is the tafseer of Abul Ala Maududi, the second is of Ibn Kathir.
Ala-Maududi
(8:39) And fight against them until the mischief ends and the way prescribed by Allah – the whole of it -prevail[31] Then, if they give up mischief, surely Allah sees what they do.
31. This is a reiteration of the purpose, mentioned earlier in al-Baqarah 2: 193, for which Muslims are required to wage war. The purpose is two-fold. Negatively speaking, the purpose is to eradicate ‘mischief’. The positive purpose consists of establishing a state of affairs wherein all obedience is rendered to God alone. This alone is the purpose for which the believers may, rather should, fight. Fighting for any other purpose is not lawful. Nor does it behove men of faith to take part in wars for worldly purposes. For further explanation see Towards Understanding the Qur’an, vol. 1, (Surah Al-Baqarah, ayat 193) note 204-205.
