Surah Al-Anbiya Ayat 65 in Arabic Text
Here you can read various translations of verse 65
Then they reversed themselves, [saying], “You have already known that these do not speak!”
Then were they confounded with shame: (they said), “Thou knowest full well that these (idols) do not speak!”
Then their minds were turned upside down, and they said: “You know well that they do not speak.”
Then they turned to themselves (their first thought and said): “Indeed you [Ibrahim (Abraham)] know well that these (idols) speak not!”
And they were utterly confounded, and they said: Well thou knowest that these speak not.
Thereafter they were made to relapse (Literally: they were turned upon their heads) (into idolatry), (saying), “Indeed you already know that these (can) in no way pronounce (a word).”
but then they lapsed again and said, ‘You know very well these gods cannot speak.’
Quran 21 Verse 65 Explanation
For those looking for commentary to help with the understanding of Surah Al-Anbiya ayat 65, we’ve provided two Tafseer works below. The first is the tafseer of Abul Ala Maududi, the second is of Ibn Kathir.
(21:65) Then their minds were turned upside down, and they said: You know well that they do not speak.
61. Literally the original text means: They were turned down upon their heads. Some commentators have interpreted it to mean: They hung down their heads with shame. But this does not fit in the context and the wording of the text. The right interpretation would be: When they considered the answer of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him), they realized that they themselves were in the wrong, because they had set up helpless idols as deities, which could not even speak a word as to who had broken them. But soon after this, they were overpowered by obduracy and ignorance which perverted their minds and they again relapsed into crookedness.
The tafsir of Surah Anbiya verse 65 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
