Surah Qalam Ayat 17 in Arabic Text
English Translation
Here you can read various translations of verse 17
Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning
Verily We have tried them as We tried the People of the Garden, when they resolved to gather the fruits of the (garden) in the morning.
We have put them [i.e., the Makkans] to test even as We put to test the owners of the orchard when they vowed that they would gather the fruit of their orchard in the morning,
Verily, We have tried them as We tried the people of the garden, when they swore to pluck the fruits of the (garden) in the morning,
Lo! We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed that they would pluck its fruit next morning,
Surely We have tried them as We tried the companions (i.e., owners) of the garden, as they swore that indeed they would definitely wrest away (i.e., gather all) (its fruits) in the (early) morning,
We have tried them as We tried the owners of a certain garden, who swore that they would harvest its fruits in the morning
Quran 68 Verse 17 Explanation
For those looking for commentary to help with the understanding of Surah Qalam ayat 17, we’ve provided two Tafseer works below. The first is the tafseer of Abul Ala Maududi, the second is of Ibn Kathir.
Ala-Maududi
(68:17) We have put them [i.e., the Makkans] to test even as We put to test the owners of the orchard[12] when they vowed that they would gather the fruit of their orchard in the morning,
12. Here, one should also keep (Surah Al-Kahf, Ayat 32-44) in view, in which the parable of the owners of two gardens has been cited for teaching a lesson.
Ibn-Kathir
17. Verily, We have tried them as We tried the People of the Garden, when they swore to pluck the fruits in the morning, 18. Without (saying: “If Allah wills.”) 19. Then there passed over it a Ta’if from your Lord while they were asleep. 20. So by the morning, it became like As-Sarim. 21. Then they called out (one to another as soon) as the morning broke. 22. Saying: “Go to your tilth in the morning, if you would pluck (the fruits).” 23. So they departed, and they were whispering: 24. “No poor person shall enter upon you into it today.” 25. And they went in the morning with Hard Qadirin. 26. But when they saw it, they said: “Verily, we have gone astray.” 27. “Nay! Indeed we are deprived!” 28. The Awsat among them said; “Did I not tell you, `Why do you not Tusabbihun.”’
