They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you].
Their desire is that thou shouldst be pliant: so would they be pliant.
they would wish you to be pliant so that they too may be pliant.
They wish that you should compromise (in religion out of courtesy) with them, so they (too) would compromise with you.
Who would have had thee compromise, that they may compromise.
They would like (if) you would dissimulate, then they would dissimulate.
they want you to compromise with them and then they will compromise with you––
وه تو چاہتے ہیں کہ تو ذرا ڈھیلا ہو تو یہ بھی ڈھیلے پڑ جائیں

Ala-Maududi
(68:9) they would wish you to be pliant so that they too may be pliant.[5]
5. That is, if you slackened a little in your propagation of Islam, they also would slacken in their opposition to you. Or, if you became inclined to effect some changes in your faith to suit these people, they too would effect a compromise with you.
