English Translation

Here you can read various translations of verse 136

Sahih International
And the polytheists assign to Allah from that which He created of crops and livestock a share and say, “This is for Allah,” by their claim, “and this is for our partners [associated with Him].” But what is for their “partners” does not reach Allah, while what is for Allah – this reaches their “partners.” Evil is that which they rule.

Yusuf Ali
Out of what Allah hath produced in abundance in tilth and in cattle, they assigned Him a share: they say, according to their fancies: “This is for Allah, and this” – for our “partners”! but the share of their” partners “reacheth not Allah, whilst the share of Allah reacheth their “partners”! evil (and unjust) is their assignment!

Abul Ala Maududi
They assign to Allah a portion out of the produce and cattle that He has created, saying out of their fancy: ‘This is for Allah’ – so they deem -‘and this is for the associates (of Allah) whom we have contrived.’ Then, the portion assigned to the beings whom they have set up as associates (of Allah) does not reach Allah, but the portion assigned to Allah reaches the beings they set up as associates (of Allah)! Indeed evil is what they decide!

Muhsin Khan
And they assign to Allah a share of the tilth and cattle which He has created, and they say: “This is for Allah according to their pretending, and this is for our (Allah’s so-called) partners.” But the share of their (Allah’s so-called) “partners” reaches not Allah, while the share of Allah reaches their (Allah’s so-called) “partners”! Evil is the way they judge!

Pickthall
They assign unto Allah, of the crops and cattle which He created, a portion, and they say: “This is Allah’s” – in their make-believe – “and this is for (His) partners in regard to us.” Thus that which (they assign) unto His partners in them reacheth not Allah and that which (they assign) unto Allah goeth to their (so-called) partners. Evil is their ordinance.

Dr. Ghali
And they made for Allah of whatever tillage and cattle that He propagated, an assignment; so they said, “This is for Allah, ” according to their assertion, and, “This is for Allah” according to their assertion, and, “This is for our associates.” (i.e., what they associate with Allah) So, whatever is for their associates does not get to Allah, and whatever is for Allah, then (this is what) gets to their associates. Odious is whatever (way) they judge!

Abdel Haleem
They apportion to God a share of the produce and the livestock He created, saying, ‘This is for God’- so they claim!- ‘ and this is for our idols.’ Their idols’ share does not reach God, but God’s share does reach their idols: how badly they judge!

Quran 4 Verse 136 Explanation

For those looking for commentary to help with the understanding of Surah An-Nisa ayat 136, we’ve provided two Tafseer works below. The first is the tafseer of Abul Ala Maududi, the second is of Ibn Kathir.

Ala-Maududi

(4:136) Believers! Believe[166] in Allah and His Messenger and in the Book He has revealed to His Messenger, and in the Book He revealed before. And whoever disbelieves[167] in Allah, in His angels, in His Books, in His Messengers and in the Last Day, has indeed strayed far away.

166. To ask believers to believe might at first seem strange. The fact is, however, that belief as used here has two meanings. First, belief denotes that a man has preferred to acknowledge the soundness of true guidance, to distance himself from the fold of those who disbelieve, and to join the camp of the believers. Second, belief denotes faith, a man’s believing in the truth with all his heart, with full earnestness and sincerity. It denotes man’s sincere determination to mould his way of thinking, his taste and temperament, his likes and dislikes, his conduct and character, his friendship and enmity, and the direction of his efforts and striving, in conformity with the creed which he has resolved to embrace. This verse is addressed to all those who are ‘believers’ in the first sense of the term, and they are asked to change themselves into true believers, i.e. believers in the second sense.

167. Kufr has two meanings. One signifies categorical rejection. The other signifies that pretence of belief even when either one’s heart is not convinced or one’s conduct is flagrantly opposed to the demands of one’s belief. Here the term Kufr conveys both meanings, and the verse aims at impressing upon people that whichever kind of Kufr they adopt in respect of the fundamental beliefs of Islam, it will only alienate them from the Truth, and lead them instead to falsehood, and ultimately to their tragic failure and destruction.

Ibn-Kathir

136. O you who believe! Believe in Allah, and His Messenger, and the Book (the Qur’an) which He has sent down to His Messenger, and the Scripture which He sent down to those before; and whosoever disbelieves in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Last Day, then indeed he has strayed far away.

The Order to Have Faith after Believing

Allah commands His faithful servants to adhere to all the elements of faith, its branches, pillars and cornerstones. This is not stated as mere redundancy, but from the view of completing faith and the continual maintenence of it. For instance, the believer proclaims in every prayer,

(Guide us to the straight way.) which means, make us aware of the straight path and increase us in guidance and strengthen us on it. In this Ayah ﴿4:136﴾, Allah commands the believers to believe in Him and in His Messenger, just as He said elsewhere,

(O you who believe! Have Taqwa of Allah, and believe in His Messenger, ). Allah’s statement,

(and the Book which He has sent down to His Messenger,) refers to the Qur’an, while,

(and the Scripture which He sent down to those before (him);) refers to the previously revealed divine Books. Allah then said,

(and whosoever disbelieves in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Last Day, then indeed he has strayed far away.) meaning, he will have deviated from the correct guidance and strayed far away from its path.
