Surah An-Nisa Ayat 72 in Arabic Text

وَإِنَّ مِنكُمْ لَمَن لَّيُبَطِّئَنَّ فَإِنْ أَصَـٰبَتْكُم مُّصِيبَةٌۭ قَالَ قَدْ أَنْعَمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىَّ إِذْ لَمْ أَكُن مَّعَهُمْ شَهِيدًۭا
Wa inna minkum lamal la yubatti’anna fa in asaabatkum museebatun qaala qad an’amal laahu ‘alaiya iz lam akum ma’ahum shaheeda

English Translation

Here you can read various translations of verse 72

Sahih International
And indeed, there is among you he who lingers behind; and if disaster strikes you, he says, “Allah has favored me in that I was not present with them.”

Yusuf Ali
There are certainly among you men who would tarry behind: If a misfortune befalls you, they say: “Allah did favour us in that we were not present among them.”

Abul Ala Maududi
Among you there is such who lags behind, then if some affliction strikes you, he says: ‘Indeed Allah bestowed His favour upon me that I was not present with them.’

Muhsin Khan
There is certainly among you he who would linger behind (from fighting in Allah’s Cause). If a misfortune befalls you, he says, “Indeed Allah has favoured me in that I was not present among them.”

Pickthall
Lo! among you there is he who loitereth; and if disaster overtook you, he would say: Allah hath been gracious unto me since I was not present with them.

Dr. Ghali
And surely among you there is indeed the one who definitely tarries behind. Then in case an affliction afflicts you, he would say, ” Allah has readily favored me, as I was not a martyr-witness with them.”

Abdul Haleem
Among you there is the sort of person who is sure to lag behind: if a calamity befalls you, he says, ‘God has been gracious to me that I was not there with them,’

Ala-Maududi

(4:72) Among you there is such who lags behind,[102] then if some affliction strikes you, he says: ‘Indeed Allah bestowed His favour upon me that I was not present with them.’


102. Another meaning could be that such persons not only shirk the risks of fighting themselves but also go about spreading demoralization to discourage others from fighting in the name of God.
