Surah Ghafir Ayat 74 in Arabic Text

مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِۖ قَالُواْ ضَلُّواْ عَنَّا بَل لَّمۡ نَكُن نَّدۡعُواْ مِن قَبۡلُ شَيۡـٔٗاۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ
Min doonil laahi qaaloo dalloo ‘annaa bal lam nakun nad’oo min qablu shai’aa; kazaalika yudillul laahul kaafireen

English Translation

Here you can read various translations of verse 74

Sahih International
Other than Allah?” They will say, “They have departed from us; rather, we did not used to invoke previously anything.” Thus does Allah put astray the disbelievers.

Yusuf Ali
“In derogation of Allah?” They will reply: “They have left us in the lurch: Nay, we invoked not, of old, anything (that had real existence).” Thus does Allah leave the Unbelievers to stray.

Abul Ala Maududi
associated with Allah in His Divinity?” They will say: “We have lost them; rather, we never used to call upon anyone before.” Thus will Allah cause them to stumble in error.

Muhsin Khan
“Besides Allah” They will say: “They have vanished from us: Nay, we did not invoke (worship) anything before.” Thus Allah leads astray the disbelievers.

Pickthall
Beside Allah? They say: They have failed us; but we used not to pray to anything before. Thus doth Allah send astray the disbelievers (in His guidance).

Dr. Ghali
Apart from Allah?” They will say, “They have erred away from us; no indeed, we used not to invoke anything earlier.” Thus Allah leads the disbelievers into error.

Quran 40 Verse 74 Explanation

Ala-Maududi

(40:74) associated with Allah in His Divinity?”[102] They will say: “We have lost them; rather, we never used to call upon anyone before.”[103] Thus will Allah cause them to stumble in error.


102. That is, if they really were gods or associates in Godhead, and you worshiped them in the hope that they would help you in the evil time, then why don’t they come to rescue you now?

103. They do not mean to say, we did not associate them with God in the world, but they mean: Now we have understood well that those whom we invoked in the world were nothing and mere nonentities.
