إِلَّا حَمِيمٗا وَغَسَّاقٗا
Illa hamee maw-wa ghas saaqa

English Translation

Sahih International
Except scalding water and [foul] purulence –

Yusuf Ali
Save a boiling fluid and a fluid, dark, murky, intensely cold,

Abul Ala Maududi
save boiling water and wash of the wounds;

Muhsin Khan
Except boiling water, and dirty wound discharges.

Pickthall
Save boiling water and a paralysing cold:

Dr. Ghali
Except scalding water and (overflowing) pus,

Abdel Haleem
except one that is scalding and dark––

Ala-Maududi

(78:25) save boiling water and wash of the wounds;[16]


16. The word ghassaq as used in the original applies to pus, blood, pus-blood and all those fluids that flow out from the eyes and skins as a result of a grievous penalty. Besides, this word is also used for a thing which stinks and gives out horrid, offensive smell.
