Surah Nahl Ayat 57 in Arabic Text

وَيَجْعَلُونَ لِلَّهِ ٱلْبَنَـٰتِ سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥ ۙ وَلَهُم مَّا يَشْتَهُونَ
Wa yaj’aloona lillaahil banaati Subhaanahoo wa lahum maa yashtahoon

English Translation

Here you can read various translations of verse 57

Sahih International
And they attribute to Allah daughters – exalted is He – and for them is what they desire.

Yusuf Ali
And they assign daughters for Allah! – Glory be to Him! – and for themselves (sons,- the issue) they desire!

Abul Ala Maududi
They assign daughters to Allah – glory be to Him – whereas they assign to themselves what they truly desire!

Muhsin Khan
And they assign daughters unto Allah! Glorified (and Exalted) be He above all that they associate with Him!. And unto themselves what they desire;

Pickthall
And they assign unto Allah daughters – Be He Glorified! – and unto themselves what they desire;

Dr. Ghali
And they make up to Allah daughters. All Extolment be to Him! And they have whatever they lust for.

Abdel Haleem
They assign daughters to God––may He be exalted!––and the [sons] they desire to themselves.

Quran 16 Verse 57 Explanation

Ala-Maududi

(16:57) They assign daughters to Allah[50] – glory be to Him – whereas they assign to themselves what they truly desire![51]


50. This refers to a tradition of the ancient Arabs. They regarded their goddesses and angels as daughters of God.

51. That is, “sons.”

Ibn-Kathir
