Jumma Mubarak!
Jewish people have sabbath day on Saturday, Christians have their church services on Sundays, we Muslims celebrate Friday as our holy day.
It was named Jumma because it is derived from the word Al-Jam’ in Arabic which means to gather.
Abu Hurairah reports that one Friday the Prophet (saws) said: “O gathering of Muslims, Allah has made this day (of Friday) an Eid for you, so make ghusl and use the miswak (on this day).” Related by At-Tabarani
There’s is even a surah in the Quran titled Al-Jumu’ah. In the last 3 ayat of this surah Allah says,
Translation:
(62:9) O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu’ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.
(62:10) And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah often that you may succeed.
(62:11) But when they saw a transaction or a diversion, [O Muhammad], they rushed to it and left you standing. Say, “What is with Allah is better than diversion and than a transaction, and Allah is the best of providers.”
In these verses Allah asks us to temporarily stop all our work and to spend a part of our day at Jumma prayer. He does not ask us to spend the entire day, just a small part.
Afterwards, we can ‘disperse within the land’ so we may seek the bounty he has left for us. So remember, do not be easily distracted on Friday. Make time for Allah. Only to the people who remember Allah, Allah will remember them.
So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.
Surah Al Baqarah 2:152
Why Friday?
Friday was not just chosen to get a separate holiday from the Jews and Christians. There is actual significance to this day. In the following hadith it says on Friday the sun was risen and Adam (AS) was created.
Abu Hurairah narrated that: the Prophet said: “The best day that the sun has risen upon is Friday. On it Adam was created, on it he entered Paradise, and on it, he was expelled from it. And the Hour will not be established except on Friday.” Grade : Sahih (Darussalam) Reference : Jami at-Tirmidhi 488 In-book reference : Book 4, Hadith 1

Keeping the prayer and khutbah short
The Prophet showed us an example of his leadership during Friday prayer. He would keep his sermon short but long enough for people to understand a meaningful lesson. It was not long that it would lead to boredom. Jabir ibn Samurah reported:
I was praying with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and his prayer was of moderate length and his sermon was of moderate length.

A man should not make his brother get up to sit in his place
I heard Nazi’ saying, “Ibn Umar, said, ‘The Prophet (saw) forbade that a man should make another man to get up to sit in his place’ “. I said to Nafi, ‘Is it for Jumua prayer only?’ He replied, “For Jumua prayer and any other (prayer).” Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 911 In-book reference : Book 11, Hadith 35
Friday Jumma is one of the best times to make Duaa. (see article on Duas you can recite for forgiveness)
Allah’s Messenger (saw) (p.b.u.h) talked about Friday and said, “There is an hour (opportune time) on Friday and if a Muslim gets it while praying and asks something from Allah, then Allah will definitely meet his demand.” And he (the Prophet) pointed out the shortness of that time with his hands. Reference : Sahih Al-Bukhari 935 In-book reference : Book 11, Hadith 59
Recite Surah Kahf on night of Jumu’ah:
Amra daughter of Abd al-Rahman reported on the authority of the sister of Amra: I memorised (surah) “Kahf, by the glorious Qur’an” from the mouth of the Messenger of Allah (SAWS) on Friday for he recited it on the pulpit on every Friday. The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “Whoever reads Surat al-Kahf on the night of Jumu’ah, will have a light that will stretch between him and the Ancient House (the Ka’bah).” [Narrated by al-Daarimi, 3407. This Hadith was classed as Sahih by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami, 6471]
According to this narration, the good deed of the recitation of Surat al-Kahf will appear as light and guidance on the Day of Resurrection. This light will protect the Muslim from the horrors of the grave and the Hereafter.
It is forbidden to fast on friday alone:
Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard the Prophet (SAWS) saying, “None of you should fast on Friday unless he fasts a day before or after it.” Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 1985 In-book reference : Book 30, Hadith 92
Go To Jumma Early:
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Messenger (SAWS) said, “Any person who takes a bath on Friday like the bath of Janaba and then goes for the prayer (in the first hour i.e. early), it is as if he had sacrificed a camel (in Allah’s cause); and whoever goes in the second hour it is as if he had sacrificed a cow; and whoever goes in the third hour, then it is as if he had sacrificed a horned ram; and if one goes in the fourth hour, then it is as if he had sacrificed a hen; and whoever goes in the fifth hour then it is as if he had offered an egg. When the Imam comes out (i.e. starts delivering the Khutba), the angels present themselves to listen to the Khutba.” Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 881. Also Mentioned in Muslim 850.
Conclusion
Verily, this is the straight path, so follow it and do not follow other paths. (6:153) Source: Musnad Ahmad 4423, Grade: Sahih
