Surah Al-Ma’idah Ayat 71 in Arabic Text

وَحَسِبُوٓاْ أَلَّا تَكُونَ فِتۡنَةٞ فَعَمُواْ وَصَمُّواْ ثُمَّ تَابَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيۡهِمۡ ثُمَّ عَمُواْ وَصَمُّواْ كَثِيرٞ مِّنۡهُمۡۚ وَٱللَّهُ بَصِيرُۢ بِمَا يَعۡمَلُونَ
Wa hasibooo allaa takoona fitnatun fa’amoo wa sammoo summa taabal laahu ‘alaihim summa ‘amoo wa sammoo kaseerum minhum; wallaahu baseerum bimaa ya’maloon

English Translation

Here you can read various translations of verse 71

Sahih International
And they thought there would be no [resulting] punishment, so they became blind and deaf. Then Allah turned to them in forgiveness; then [again] many of them became blind and deaf. And Allah is Seeing of what they do.

Yusuf Ali
They thought there would be no trial (or punishment); so they became blind and deaf; yet Allah (in mercy) turned to them; yet again many of them became blind and deaf. But Allah sees well all that they do.

Abul Ala Maududi
thinking that no harm would come from it. Thus they became blind and deaf (to the Truth). Thereafter Allah turned towards them in gracious forgiveness; but many of them became even more deaf and blind (to the Truth). Allah sees all that they do.

Muhsin Khan
They thought there will be no Fitnah (trial or punishment), so they became blind and deaf; after that Allah turned to them (with Forgiveness); yet again many of them became blind and deaf. And Allah is the All-Seer of what they do.

Pickthall
They thought no harm would come of it, so they were wilfully blind and deaf. And afterward Allah turned (in mercy) toward them. Now (even after that) are many of them wilfully blind and deaf. Allah is Seer of what they do.

Dr. Ghali
And they reckoned that there would be no temptation, so they were willfully blind, and they were willfully deaf, (yet) thereafter Allah relented on them; (then) thereafter they were willfully blind and they were willfully deaf, many of them; and Allah is Ever-Beholding whatever they do.

Abdel Haleem
they thought no harm could come to them and so became blind and deaf [to God]. God turned to them in mercy but many of them again became blind and deaf: God is fully aware of their actions.

Muhammad Junagarhi
اور سمجھ بیٹھے کہ کوئی پکڑ نہ ہوگی، پس اندھے بہرے بن بیٹھے، پھر اللہ تعالیٰ نے ان کی توبہ قبول کی، اس کے بعد بھی ان میں سے اکثر اندھے بہرے ہوگئے۔ اللہ تعالیٰ ان کے اعمال کو بخوبی دیکھنے واﻻ ہے

Ala-Maududi

(5:71) thinking that no harm would come from it. Thus they became blind and deaf (to the Truth). Thereafter Allah turned towards them in gracious forgiveness; but many of them became even more deaf and blind (to the Truth). Allah sees all that they do.
