Surah Al-Anfal Ayat 73 in Arabic Text
Here you can read various translations of verse 73
And those who disbelieved are allies of one another. If you do not do so, there will be fitnah on earth and great corruption.
The Unbelievers are protectors, one of another: Unless ye do this, (protect each other), there would be tumult and oppression on earth, and great mischief.
And those who disbelieve. they are allies of one another; and unless you act likewise. there will be oppression in the world and great corruption.
And those who disbelieve are allies to one another, (and) if you (Muslims of the whole world collectively) do not do so (i.e. become allies, as one united block with one Khalifah – chief Muslim ruler for the whole Muslim world to make victorious Allah’s Religion of Islamic Monotheism), there will be Fitnah (wars, battles, polytheism, etc.) and oppression on earth, and a great mischief and corruption (appearance of polytheism).
And those who disbelieve are protectors one of another – If ye do not so, there will be confusion in the land, and great corruption.
And the ones who have disbelieved are patrons one of another. In case you do not (i.e., if the believers do not patronize each other) perform that, there will be temptation (Or: dissension) in the earth and great corruption.
The disbelievers support one another. If you do not do the same, there will be persecution in the land and great corruption.
Quran 8 Verse 73 Explanation
For those looking for commentary to help with the understanding of Surah Al-Anfal ayat 73, we’ve provided two Tafseer works below. The first is the tafseer of Abul Ala Maududi, the second is of Ibn Kathir.
(8:73) And those who disbelieve. they are allies of one another; and unless you act likewise. there will be oppression in the world and great corruption.
52. If the words ‘unless you also help one another’ in the verse are regarded as a continuation of the preceding verse, they would mean that if Muslims do not support each other in the way, unbelielers do, this would give rise to much mischief and disorder in the world. However, if these words are considered to be connected with the directives embodied in (verse 72) onwards, their purpose would be to emphasize that the world would become full of mischief and disorder if the Muslims of Dar al-Islam (a) failed to help one another; (b) failed to provide political support and protection to the Muslims who have settled down in non-Islamic states and have not migrated to Dar al-lslam; (c) failed to help the Muslims living under oppression in territories outside Dar al-Islam when they ask for it, and (d) failed to sever their friendly ties with the unbelievers.
73. And those who disbelieve are allies of one another, (and) if you (Muslims) do not do so (protect one another), there will be Fitnah on the earth, and great corruption.
After Allah mentioned that the believers are the supporters of one another, He severed all ties of support between them and the disbelievers. In his Mustadrak, Al-Hakim recorded that Usamah said that the Prophet said,
(No followers of two religions inherit from each other. Therefore, neither a Muslim inherits from a disbeliever nor a disbeliever from a Muslim.)
The Prophet recited this Ayah,
(And those who disbelieve are supporters of one another, (and) if you (Muslims) do not do so (protect one another), there will be Fitnah on the earth, and great corruption.) Al-Hakim said, “Its chain is Sahih, and they did not record it.” However, the following, from Usamah bin Zayd, is in the Two Sahihs; the Messenger of Allah said,
(Neither a Muslim inherits from a disbeliever nor a disbeliever inherits from a Muslim.)
Allah said next,
(If you do not do so, there will be Fitnah and oppression on the earth, and a great corruption), meaning, if you do not shun the idolators and offer your loyalty to the believers, Fitnah will overcome the people. Then confusion ﴿polytheism and corruption﴾ will be rampant, for the believers will be mixed with disbelievers, resulting in tremendous, widespread trials ﴿corruption and mischief﴾ between people.
