Surah Nahl Ayat 113 in Arabic Text

وَلَقَدۡ جَآءَهُمۡ رَسُولٞ مِّنۡهُمۡ فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ وَهُمۡ ظَٰلِمُونَ
Wa laqad jaaa’ahum Rasoolum minhum fakazzaboohu fa akhazahumul ‘azaabu wa hum zaalimoon

English Translation

Here you can read various translations of verse 113

Sahih International
And there had certainly come to them a Messenger from among themselves, but they denied him; so punishment overtook them while they were wrongdoers.

Yusuf Ali
And there came to them a Messenger from among themselves, but they falsely rejected him; so the Wrath seized them even in the midst of their iniquities.

Abul Ala Maududi
Most certainly a Messenger came to them from among them; but they rejected him, calling him a liar. Therefore chastisement seized them while they engaged in wrong-doing.

Muhsin Khan
And verily, there had come unto them a Messenger (Muhammad SAW) from among themselves, but they denied him, so the torment overtook them while they were Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.).

Pickthall
And verily there had come unto them a messenger from among them, but they had denied him, and so the torment seized them while they were wrong-doers.

Dr. Ghali
And indeed a Messenger from among them already came to them, then they cried him lies; so the torment took them (away) and they were unjust.

Abdel Haleem
A messenger who was one of them came to them, but they called him a liar. So punishment overwhelmed them in the midst of their evildoing.

Quran 16 Verse 113 Explanation

Ala-Maududi

(16:113) Most certainly a Messenger came to them from among them; but they rejected him, calling him a liar. Therefore chastisement seized them while they engaged in wrong-doing.[112]


112. That habitation has not been specified here nor have the commentators definitely pointed out which that habitation was. However, there is a saying of Ibn Abbas (which seems to be correct) that the place referred to is Makkah itself. In that case, hunger and fear will mean the famine which prevailed over the people of Makkah for several years during the Prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him).
