Surah Hud Ayat 72 in Arabic Text

قَالَتۡ يَٰوَيۡلَتَىٰٓ ءَأَلِدُ وَأَنَا۠ عَجُوزٞ وَهَٰذَا بَعۡلِي شَيۡخًاۖ إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَشَيۡءٌ عَجِيبٞ
Qaalat yaa wailataaa ‘aalidu wa ana ‘ajoozunw wa haaza ba’lee shaikhan inna haazaa lashai’un ‘ajeeb

English Translation

Sahih International
She said, “Woe to me! Shall I give birth while I am an old woman and this, my husband, is an old man? Indeed, this is an amazing thing!”

Yusuf Ali
She said: “Alas for me! shall I bear a child, seeing I am an old woman, and my husband here is an old man? That would indeed be a wonderful thing!”

Abul Ala Maududi
She said: ‘Woe is me! Shall I bear a child now that I am an old woman and my husband is well advanced in years. This is indeed strange!’

Muhsin Khan
She said (in astonishment): “Woe unto me! Shall I bear a child while I am an old woman, and here is my husband, an old man? Verily! This is a strange thing!”

Pickthall
She said: Oh woe is me! Shall I bear a child when I am an old woman, and this my husband is an old man? Lo! this is a strange thing!

Dr. Ghali
She said, “O woe to me! will I give birth and I am an old woman, and this my husband is an aged man? Surely, this is indeed a wonderful thing.”

Ala-Maududi

(11:72) She said: ‘Woe is me![80] Shall I bear a child now that I am an old woman and my husband is well advanced in years.[81] This is indeed strange!’


80. These words were not used by her in their literal sense as an exclamation of grief and lamentation. She uttered these words merely to express surprise at the news.

81. According to the Bible Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) was 100 years old at the time and Sarah was 90 years.
