Surah Al-A’raf Ayat 161 in Arabic Text

وَإِذْ قِيلَ لَهُمُ ٱسْكُنُوا۟ هَـٰذِهِ ٱلْقَرْيَةَ وَكُلُوا۟ مِنْهَا حَيْثُ شِئْتُمْ وَقُولُوا۟ حِطَّةٌۭ وَٱدْخُلُوا۟ ٱلْبَابَ سُجَّدًۭا نَّغْفِرْ لَكُمْ خَطِيٓـَٔـٰتِكُمْ ۚ سَنَزِيدُ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
Wa iz qeela lahumuskunoo haazihil qaryata wa kuloo minhaa haisu shi’tum wa qooloo hittatunw wadkhulul baaba sujjadan naghfir lakum khateee’aatikum; sanazeedul muhsineen

English Translation

Sahih International
And [mention, O Muhammad], when it was said to them, “Dwell in this city and eat from it wherever you will and say, ‘Relieve us of our burdens,’ and enter the gate bowing humbly; We will [then] forgive you your sins. We will increase the doers of good [in goodness and reward].”

Yusuf Ali
And remember it was said to them: “Dwell in this town and eat therein as ye wish, but say the word of humility and enter the gate in a posture of humility: We shall forgive you your faults; We shall increase (the portion of) those who do good.”

Abul Ala Maududi
And recall when it was said to them: ‘Dwell in this town and eat plentifully of whatever you please, and say: “Repentance”, and enter the gate prostrate. We shall forgive you your sins and shall bestow further favours on those who do good.’

Muhsin Khan
And (remember) when it was said to them: “Dwell in this town (Jerusalem) and eat therefrom wherever you wish, and say, ‘(O Allah) forgive our sins’; and enter the gate prostrate (bowing with humility). We shall forgive you your wrong-doings. We shall increase (the reward) for the good-doers.”

Pickthall
And when it was said unto them: Dwell in this township and eat therefrom whence ye will, and say “Repentance,” and enter the gate prostrate; We shall forgive you your sins; We shall increase (reward) for the right-doers.

Dr. Ghali
And as it was said to them, “Dwell (serenely) in this town and eat of it where you decide, and say, “Unburdening, ” (Unburdening of their sins, i.e, forgiveness) and enter the gate constantly prostrating. (Then) We shall forgive you your offences. We will soon increase the fair-doers.”.

Abdel Haleem
When they were told, ‘Enter this town and eat freely there as you will, but say, “Relieve us!” and enter its gate humbly: then We shall forgive you your sins, and increase the reward of those who do good,’

Quran 7 Verse 161 Explanation

Ala-Maududi

(7:161) And recall[120] when it was said to them: ‘Dwell in this town and eat plentifully of whatever you please, and say: “Repentance”, and enter the gate prostrate. We shall forgive you your sins and shall bestow further favours on those who do good.’


120. This alludes to their constant defiance and rebellion in face of God’ favours which eventually brought about their destruction.
